Hard facts about effect of climate control in dairy

Yes, we have hard facts, which prove the importance of advanced climate to improve productivity in 4 legs industries!

From a historic point of view production results in the dairy industry have proved to be best in the colder regions of the world. It has been impossible for farmers in hot areas to get high milk production during the warm period and also it has been problematic for the cows to get pregnant when they have heat stress. Heat stress effects on fertility are an even larger problem than reduced milk production.

In countries with advanced climate control in dairy farms the milk production will be around 40-48 liters milk per cow per day. In a country like Brazil the best farmers have in average around 28 liters milk per cow per day. In countries like Vietnam the milk production can be reduced to 12 liters/cow/day during summer if a climate system is not installed.

If the farmers in warm areas do not invest in semi-advanced climate systems, the following will happen:

  • Milk production – reduction of milk production up to 50% from normal production
  • Fertility - reduction of 50% in all fertility parameters in cows under heat stress
  • Feed efficiency – reduction of feed efficiency up to 10%
  • Health – cow under heat stress is much more sensitive to many types of health issues, however, it is not simple to calculate losses from these events

Facts

  • In the future, all dairy farms will have more or less advanced climate systems
  • Without advanced ventilation the production results in warmer regions can be reduced with 50%
  • Pay back for climate system is typical 3 years
  • Munters are industry leaders in the new advanced cross/tunnel ventilation concept for dairy
