Remove polluting solvents for a healthier environment

Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) contribute to ground-level smog, posing risks to the health of your employees and the community. Munters Zeolite VOC abatement technologies provide reliable, energy-efficient and cost-saving solutions for removing solvents from the air.

VOCs are emitted by industrial chemicals, solvents, alcohols, and petroleum products, such as gasoline, which produce vapors at room temperature. When released, they combine with existing nitrous oxides, in the presence of sunlight and heat, to form atmospheric ozone, or “smog.” Munters VOC abatement equipment can remove these pollutants from the exhaust stream, preventing them from being released into the atmosphere. Our reliable, cost-saving and energy-efficient zeolite concentrators save money and energy, and help deliver clean air to the world.

Munters Zeolite VOC abatement technology

The basic molecular structure of zeolite is a tetrahedron, or pyramid, formed by silicon oxides (SiOn). The tetrahedron has one silicon atom in the center and an oxygen atom at each corner. The zeolites are linked together by oxygen atoms. Linked zeolites form pores, the size of which are determined by the number of zeolite molecules that are linked together.

Depending on the number of linkages and which alkali ions are present in the crystal structure, several types of zeolites are formed, all with different pore sizes. The size of the pores also determines which VOCs can be adsorbed.
Munters Zeol VOC abatement equipment use a combination of hydrophobic zeolites with different pore sizes. This mixture enables the adsorption of a wide range of organic solvents. These hydrophobic zeolites adsorb most commercially available solvents.

A zeolite pore exerts a weak attractive force on and holds onto a VOC. This weak physical attractive force between chemically neutral compounds is known as the van der Waals force. The VOC will remain in the pore until heated, at which time zeolite will release the VOC into the air.

When VOC-laden air flows past zeolite molecules, the zeolite acts as a reverse filter, or molecular sieve, capturing the compounds that can be adsorbed and allowing the compounds that are too large to flow past it.

How a Munters VOC concentrator works

Process air enters the system, particles are filtered out and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are absorbed by a zeolite rotor. A process fan pulls the air through the rotor, releasing clean air. Meanwhile, a heated air stream removes and concentrates VOCs, regenerating the rotor for continuous VOC absorption. Ultimately, the concentrated VOCs are directed to a thermal oxidizer for safe destruction.

Other Clean technologies from Munters

Munters mist eliminators prevent droplets containing contaminants from escaping into the environment, helping you meet legislative requirements and avoid sanctions. They also capture the solvent liquid, minimizing the cost of cleaning the gases. Munters mass transfer technology separates chemical components and facilitates liquid extraction.
